About Thurmsaton Marching Brass

The band is an activity within the Scout and Guide movement and any member of the movement has the opportunity to join the band.
Our Band Trainee section allows the newcomers to gain a basic understanding of what
being in a marching band is all about without any of the pressures of performing in public.
Drill movements and marching are learnt and within a very short space of time the Trainees can work together like an RAF drill squad.
The recruits are introduced to the different types of instruments used in the band and they all get the chance to 'have-a-go' at playing them all.
We teach each Trainee the basics of reading music so that when they choose an instrument to play they can begin to play simple tunes.
They don't need to own, or buy, an instrument as we provide everything that is required. All it costs is £2.50 per month!! .....great value!! As the year progresses the Trainees will begin to play music together and also learn to both march and play at the same time .. something that is not easy to do!

At the end of the year, just before Christmas, we hold a Graduation ceremony.
The Band Trainees parents come along to the Headquarters to watch them perform for the first time together. Each Trainee is awarded a Certificate of Achievement, meaning that they have completed their basic training, and they then graduate as Junior Bandsmen.
After the Christmas holidays the new Junior Bandsmen begin working together with the Senior Bandsmen and start to learn more music ready for performing together in ceremonial parades, carnivals and events throughout the Country.
